STRATHBOGIE RANGES PUT THEIR WINES ON TRIAL

Strathbogie Ranges Wine producers (alias the Wine Rangers) came down from their mountain vineyards to put their exquisite wines on trial by a jury headed by James Halliday, Sally Fisk of Australian Wine Selectors and Tony Harper of the Brisbane News.

Speaking for the second year running at the Awards Dinner (Old Flour Mill, Euroa, Friday Oct 6) for James stressed the importance of the Strathbogie Ranges continuing to produce varieties that are a good fit with the region’s soils, climate and position – its terroir. James said that:

“The region is relatively young, but year by year the quality of the wines continues to grow, and we can look forward to even better wines being made as the region grows and build its capacity.”

“Given the variations in altitudes and soil type, generalizations are difficult. But it seems highly probable that two of the most successful varieties will continue to be Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. These have all the varietal character one could wish for and should have the broadest market appeal, both in Australia and overseas”.

THE FUTURE

Strathbogie Wine Rangers are utterly committed to producing top quality wines. In 2007 they will cooperate with Melbourne University on a ‘first-ever-for-Australia’, in-depth study of the region’s terroir that will classify, define, model and document the natural resources of all the region’s
vineyards. This will enhance producers’ understanding of the region’s environmental capacities, strengthen management practices and foster continuous improvement of wine quality.
